4 Internet Shows You Should Be Watching

Published on June 12, 2012

My favorite thing about working in television, is working while watching television. I get to screen shows, work in edit rooms, write treatments, etc. But even more than that…. I love me some youtube. And I’m not talking about the funny clips that are destined to end up Tosh.0 or the local news (IE World Star material)… I like original and unusual work that many times goes unseen unless someone tells you about it. Here are my recommendations:

1.  The Wendy Williams After Show- Thank god for censorship because this woman is a self-declared hot mess behind the scenes. She has her beloved tech guy Tristan follow her from the stage to her office, inviting her internet fans to more gossip and comedy.  She’s brutally honest, and even responds to the comments people leave on youtube.  From her wig choices, to the unflattering pink lipstick she insists on wearing, to what she really thinks of the guests she had that day (and sometimes she admits that they were difficult and boring), I would dare say that sometimes the After Show is better than the actual TV program.  Caution: She eats on camera and sometimes does the ugly cry…

2.  The Misadventures of AWKWARD Black Girl - Probably one of the MOST SUCCESSFUL independent internet series of this decade, this show made national headline news with its viral popularity and hilarious storylines.  The comedy focuses on Jay, a black professional who struggles with being awkward.  She hates her job and her dating life is so painfully sad that she must vent through rap lyrics when she is alone.  As each episode develops, it seems that Jay is on her way to a better life with new friends and a love interest, but alas all of that falls a part in a FML style.  Season 2 is currently being filmed and my legitimate fear is that it won’t be as smart or sassy because of all of the fame and money being thrown at it.

3. Got 2B Real – You must start with the first episode and work your way through, otherwise you will miss half of the jokes in this rompy black comedy centering on 2 generations of singing divas. Patti Labelle hates Aretha, and the likes of Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Rihanna, Christina Auguilera, Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan, and even Tamar Braxton jump in to dish shade shade SHADE! If you love watching people get read and disrespected then this will quickly become a new addiction for you. Each episode is carefully crafted and edited cleverly. You will die laughing, guaranteed.

4. VSAUCE – And finally, if you are into science, unique gift ideas, magic tricks and memes then this is it! Each episode is fascinating and will have you replaying segments over and over again in amazement. This is what the Discovery Channel SHOULD be like.
